COMMON QUESTIONS
How long do pipes last? How long can I put off servicing them? Are there any guidelines?
This is the most common question we get when we are out with property owners. Unfortunately, a common answer in so many cases is that it is worse than you think. This is true particularly for pipes in the buildings constructed during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Their life span varies considerably. In many buildings constructed as late as in the 1980’s you can find acute rust damage and split plastic pipes. At the same time, it is very difficult to determine their life span because the wear on existing pipes depends on their age, the composition of the material used and of course how the pipes are used both in terms of frequency and of what is rinsed down them. In general, however, you can say that a cast iron pipe corrodes about 1 mm every 10 years. Even though only professionals should confirm the extent of damage, you can prevent much of it yourself if you know what to react to.
Can I see for myself or check what condition my pipes are in?
Yes, look at the visible pipes, for example in the basement. If there are brown spots on them, they are probably rusted through. Thanks to the greasy dirt on the inside of the pipe, gray water doesn’t run through the holes. If you press with a knife, you will soon see how bad the pipes are. Unfortunately, it is possible that even if the pipe seems fine in the parts you can see, it can be rusted through in others. Bends are particularly vulnerable parts. You should also, if there was leakage before, find out what the reason was. And if you are planning to clean the pipes, you have to think about how the deposits in the pipes may be all that is keeping the pipes from leaking.

Can Proline’s method be used in combination with other renovations in the building?
Yes, absolutely. Relining using our method can be done independent of other renovation measures on a property. It can take place before, in connection with or after other renovations. This gives the property owner the possibility of deciding him/herself which projects will be done and when without being forced to consider the fact that the drainage pipes are bad. A pipe relined using the Proline method can be linked to connectors found on the market in case further connections to the plumbing system are to be done.
In my condominium association, many have already renovated their bathrooms and kitchens, but we haven’t done anything with our pipes or plumbing. Do we have to tear these out in order to repair the drainage system?
No, with our method there is no demolition necessary. We cast the new pipes by going in through connections at the toilet, wash basin, floor drain and kitchen sink. When we are finished, you will hardly notice that we have been there.
Is the Proline method only used in apartments?
No, our method can be applied to all kinds of buildings and premises. We have done work for example in hospitals, retirement homes, stores, industries and property protected by historic status.
What is the biggest advantage to using Proline?
What is ingenious about our method is that it has minimal effect on the residents’ and the property owner’s everyday activities. Usually we work inside an apartment only one day, and the water and drains can be used precisely as usual evening, night and morning.
What security can Proline as a business offer me?
Proline is a national company with local, quick, personal service in several areas of the country. This creates the setting for professional completion of our projects. We are a stable, long-term company because of our size and our strong owner, the industrial group Lifco. We are so sure of our technique and our competence that we can even give you as our client a ten-year guarantee on our work.
Can you clean the pipes after relining with the Proline method?
Yes. The pipe withstands both high-pressure flushing and mechanical rinsing in the same way that PVC drainagepipes do. They even tolerate chemical drain cleaners.
Is the functioning of the existing pipes affected by relining?
Usually, drainpipes relined by the Proline method are considerably quieter because the inner pipe functions as a muffler. Despite the fact that the pipe dimension is somewhat reduced, the drainage capacity is increased somewhat compared to an old cast iron system because there are fewer deposits. Drainpipes are also made over-sized when they are manufactured.
How long is the guarantee period?
We give a 10-year guarantee.
What pipe dimensions can be relined using the Proline method?
Normally from 2 to 8 inches. But we have relined both smaller and larger dimensions – everything depends on the conditions.
